Wang Yi: The U.S. Side Should Translate the Important Consensus between the Two Heads of State into Concrete Policies and Actions

On September 22, 2022 local time, after delivering a keynote speech at the headquarters of the Asia Society in New York, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi answered questions on the spot.

In response to the question on how to view the role of head-of-state diplomacy in stabilizing China-U.S. relations, Wang Yi said, head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic role in steering China-U.S. relations. Since last year, the two heads of state have had engagements through video meetings and phone conversations, steering the course for the sound and steady development of bilateral relations. President Xi Jinping has clearly put forward the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between China and the United States. It's an important inspiration based on the experience in the 50 years of exchanges between China and the United States. President Joe Biden has also made the "five noes" statement, i.e. the U.S. does not seek a new Cold War with China; it does not aim to change China's system; the revitalization of its alliances is not against China; the U.S. does not support "Taiwan independence"; and it is not looking for conflict with China. If the statements of the two heads of state are put together, they will constitute a complete system with clear guiding principles and operability. However, the reality is that the administration team of the U.S. side has not translated President Biden's "five noes" statement into concrete policies, let alone in its actions against China. On the contrary, the list of unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on China is getting longer and longer; its moves are deviating further and further from the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués; more and more cliques are being created around the world to contain China. Not only China, but all countries in the world are worried about the prospect of China-U.S. relations. What the United States needs to do now is to translate President Biden's "five noes" statement into real actions. Pushing China-U.S. relations back on the right track not only meets the expectations of the two peoples, but also brings new hopes to the whole world.
